Questions About Alternative Cancer Treatment

Summary
If you are looking at an alternative cancer treatment, then take two minutes to consider these points before you proceed.

Article
Many cancer patients often have questions about the safe use of alternative cancer treatments. It should be noted that alternative cancer therapies and conventional therapies are frequently used together. Alternative cancer treatments are now much more main stream than they were once portrayed to be. Even given those facts, however, if you are considering an alternative therapy there are some facts you should be aware of. First, in almost all cases, alternative cancer treatments are best used in conjunction with standard treatments options such as chemotherapy. Relying solely on alternative cancer treatments can prove to be dangerous.

When chosen carefully and used in conjunction with your standard treatment options, alternative therapies can improve your quality of life. For example, one of the most common reasons for choosing alternative therapies is the fact that these treatments can relieve the side effects of standard treatment choices, or at least minimize them. Be aware that interrupting your standard treatment plan to utilize only alternative cancer treatments can pose a serious and dangerous risk because it provides more time for the cancer to grow. Patients should also be aware that although there is strong inclination not to inform one's doctor of their decision to utilize alternative cancer treatment it is imperative that you do so. In many cases your physician may be able to help you understand methods which you may be considering. When considering alternative cancer therapies it is important to take several steps to ensure you are choosing the treatment that is right for you. This can be accomplished by gathering as much information on the treatment as possible. Be sure the information you are gathering comes from reputable, credible and reliable sources.

Consider the claims that are made for the treatments you consider. Does the treatment claim to cure cancer or relieve symptoms and side effects? How much does the treatment cost? Is the alternative treatment widely available or does it have only limited access? Does the treatment claim to contain secret ingredients? Is it readily available from numerous sources or only one? As previously mentioned, make sure you discuss your thoughts with your physician. If it helps, bring along a supportive friend or family member to help you discuss the matter with your doctor.

Taking the time to educate yourself about these alternative therapies is the first step to ensuring you are in control regarding the decisions related to your overall health and well-being.

Editorial Comment
If nothing else, deciding on some treatment for yourself is empowering, so even the decision to simply have a massage can give you a sense of control, and this in itself can be a calming factor during what can otherwise be a very turbulent time.
