The statistics that are given for this are quite horrendous, and the last thing one needs when faced with this diagnosis.
However for those of you who need to know figures, here they are.
Firstly a few background statistics:
It is expected that around 15,000 new cases of esophageal cancer will be diagnosed each year in the United States alone during the years between 2000 and 2010. It seems that this type of cancer has been increasing at the rate of about 2% per year amongst white men, staying steady for white women, and dropping in African Americans.
Our opinion is that this may very well be diet and lifestyle related. We think that maybe the diets of African Americans is slowly improving, that maybe white women have a better overall diet than white men, and that perhaps increased stress together with a poorer diet may be what is putting more white men as risk.
As far as esophagus cancer survival rates are concerned, the good news is that these have been improving overall.
However the bad news is that this type of cancer is often diagnosed at a very advanced stage, and so the rates are still not reassuring. Apparently the current figures indicate that 16% of white patients and 10% of African American patients survive 5 years. Bear in mind that these statistics take in to account ALL patients, those diagnosed very late as well as those diagnosed early.
The interesting thing is that these figures have improved from around 4% for whites and 1% for African Americans back in the 1960’s.
Again, we think this is possibly due to better nutrition and/or more awareness of the need for vitamin and mineral supplements, as well as more awareness of the need to keep stress under control.
Whatever the reasons though, obviously early diagnosis is very important in increasing the esophagus cancer survival rate for all groups.
