The good thing about statistics is that there are always those who are not “in” them. Eg If 50% succumb to a situation then 50% also survive!
Now, although the rates of survival are nowhere near 50% for esophageal cancer sufferers, there are still some 10% plus who do get through it. The mission then, becomes one of how to increase your chances of becoming one of the 10%.
The first factor you can influence is how early it is detected. The statistics show that earlier detection increases the survival rate quite dramatically. Therefore if you have any symptoms that could be early warning signs, do insist on getting them thoroughly checked out with your family doctor.
However if your cancer is not diagnosed until a more advanced stage, there is still much you can do.
Our very strong feeling is that Glenn’s absolute determination and belief that he was going to be an esophagus cancer survivor was a major factor in his very speedy recovery. Although we were fortunate enough to have had an early diagnosis, the fact that his esophagus was back to “normal” (as shown in the endoscopy taken eleven months later) still has the medicos scratching their heads.
The other things we did immediately upon diagnosis (documented in our book) included a complete overhaul of our diets, a rigorous campaign to rid our environment of any toxic chemicals eg in soaps, hair products, toothpaste and household cleaners, and a pro-active plan to reduce all stressors in our lives. These are things everyone can do, and not just when ill, but as a preventative to becoming so. And, in fact, we continue the majority of those changes to this day, in the belief that it will keep both of us free of cancer – as it has done to date.
So if esophagus cancer survival is your goal, take heart – if we have beaten this horrid condition, then that means you have a chance to do so too!
