Have you lost more than 9-10lbs (4-5kgs) over the past 10-12 weeks? If you have and you have not been deliberately dieting, then you need to find out why this is happening.
Unexplained weight loss can be due to many factors. Some causes are short-term and of no real consequence, but others can indeed be life-threatening, eg cancer.
If your weight loss has accompanied a period of illness which has meant you have been eating less, or perhaps you have been skipping meals due to a heavy work or study load, then there may be no real problem. But if you have been eating pretty much as normal and have not been doing any extra exercise or manual labour, then it may be a good idea to take a trip to your family doctor.
Unusual weight loss could very well be an esophagus cancer symptom, but it could also be a symptom of many other cancers as well, and this is a serious early warning signal that should never be ignored.
Diabetes is often detected due to weight loss, and if you also have a constant thirst, or seem to be visiting the toilet more often than normal, and/or perhaps are suffering intermittent blurred vision, then this is highly likely to also be the cause of your weight loss.
If your weight loss is accompanied by recurring unexplained fevers, then there is a possibility that you have a chronic infection, maybe even something as serious as tuberculosis.
Weight loss can also be caused by hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid produces too much hormone. This also results I a feeling of edginess, sometimes bordering on panic.
And of course any sort of bowel upset, from infection to cancer, may also produce diarrhea or constipation, which in turn could result in weight loss.
Whatever the cause, it is important to investigate it as soon as possible. Whatever the cause an early diagnosis always gives you the best possibility of either recovery or management, particularly if it does indeed turn out to be a symptom of cancer.
